Hello!

As I know (and as I remember) you can use
an USB Stick with AIX (since V5.x ML9) to transport
data from one AIX machine to another.

Do anybody know if there exist an "official"
"external drive", attachable by USB or Firewire,
to transport data from one AIX machine to another?

Tape isn't available here and the device should have
a filesystem (like JFS2) and be mountable as
"normal" filesystem.

Maybe there is another (better) group to ask this
question, but I didn't find it.

Thanks in advance

Frank

RDX Drive ( external or internal )
Might be supported or not by your hardware ( Its at least aviavle for
the latest power hw afaik )

Hm, first hint showing system x, not power.
Unfortunately the ibm-server seems broken
(Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /systems/power on this server.)

I try to find out about the mentioned RDX drive for power systems
when the IBM server is back to normal (or whatever failed).

But it explains what the RDX drive IS.
...

For using the RDX drive with AIX:
You might read http://www-03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/WebIndex/WP101580
You only need to find out whether your HW and OS version is supported
or not. AFAIK the minimum requirement AIX level is 5.3 ML9 - see
http://www-03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/WebIndex/FQ127070

I don't know about your environment, but just ask:
1. Do you have option to use a NFS server to get data between servers?
2. Do you have internal DVD-RAM drive?
3. Do you have external SCSI connection and connect external DVD-RAM?
4. At extreme, can you temporary hot remove an HDD (break rootvg
mirror)?

External data exchange (other than network) seems to be
increasingly neglected with current Power hardware, IMHO.
I find this annoying, in particular when creating mksysbs.
With external SCSI connectors gone, one can't just hook
up a tape anymore. DVD writing is a major pita, with
very restricted support as far as drives and media are
concerned (and just 4.7GB don't cut it either).
USB support seems to be a bit flaky as well,
for example mksysb to an USB tape never worked for me,
whereas "normal" tar more or less worked.
BTW, how does one create local mksysbs for blade servers?
Booting off (USB) tape isn't supported, it seems,
and a local DVD RAM accessory isn't available either, no?

Thanks a lot. As far as I see I could create a UDF filesystem on a RDX and
mount it, so a "file-by-file" copy/create should be possible.
Will research further to check this. IBM salesman should give me a price
today, so I can also check if this solution is not too expensive.

1) No. Decentralized Servers without any significant connection
2) Maybe, but the procedure needed a "file-by-file" storage of
about 1-2 Million files
3) I will take a look at one machine today (Thursday) and check
what connections (USB, Firewire, ext.SCSI) are possible
4) Unfortunately I can't check if the servers have this possibility
Maybe I can give someone the task to check this.
A single Hot-swapable drive will be a solution, if possible
at all servers

The first thing comming in my mind was an external (mountable) drive,
as I remember this as possible. And as far as I remember I did it once
with a USB stick.

Still on research :-)
