In AIX 4.2 there is a command for saving volume groups called savevg.
Works much like a mksysb for volume groups, but without the bootimage.

With mksysb, all you had to do to restore a file was to skip past
the boot image with a mt -f /device fsf 3 and do a standard tar
command to extract the file.

I'm not having much luck with the savevg. Does anybody know what
format it is in (I'm guessing tar) and if you need to skip any
filesets, how many?

savevg is in "backup" format - checkout the "savevg" script.
Use "restore" to recover files.
If you didnt ask for a boot image you wont need to do any skips.

As from AIX 4.2 mksysb format changed from tar to backup.
See man page.
