We have an AIX 4.1.x machine behind a proxy server. I am unable to
find a technical document describing how to configure AIX so the ftp
command line program will be able to access the internet via a proxy
server.

The machine is able to access the Internet via a web browser with a
proxy server setting.

Could someone point me to a document that describes how to configure
AIX so the ftp command line program can access the Internet via a
proxy server?

Thanks to the group,
Eric

Hi,
it's not AIX that needs configuration, but each single program: as you
had to set proper info into browser config panels, the same you need
for ftp or whichever program you intend to use. Hence you need to
look inside the docs to see _if_ the command-line ftp program is
able to work using a proxy and then which environment or config files
setting you need to make.

IMHO standard command-line ftp that comes with AIX is not able to use
a proxy via environment settings like others I've seen ( using ftp_proxy
environment variable pointing to a proxy server address and port number).

You could still use it to access external sites if you have a full ftp
proxy program on your filrewall ( not an http proxy like squid able to
also proxy ftp requests ).

You can get some ftp client from OpenSource world able to deal w/ proxies.
You can browse ftp sites using your browser, putting files on remote
seervers will be somewhat difficult if not impossible tough.
