How do I change the login prompt in AIX? Something like:

Welcome to AIX 4.3.x
login:

Edit the file /etc/security/login.cfg

add this line in the default section :

herald = 'Welcome to AIX 4.3.x\n\rlogin:'

Although putting the name and version of the OS at the login prompt is
not a good idea...... you may as well add another line with a URL to
the nearest website with some good AIX exploits.......

edit the file motd in /etc to modify the welcome screen. It is highly
recommended to set the prompt with user,machine,directory
PS1="$LOGNAME@`hostname`"' $PWD >'
export PS1

One nit -- single quote doesn't work in this file for some reason.
You have to use regular quotes, like this:

herald = "Welcome to AIX 4.3.x\r\n\r\nlogin: "

I don't believe he was refering to the command prompt or motd.

As KerberoS mentioned, the solution is to edit the /etc/security/login.cfg
file and add the herald directive.

ie: herald = 'Welcome to AIX 4.3.x\n\rlogin:'

Just an FYI.

as
after login?
perhaps it will all be clear if we ponder, 'how many pins can
you stick in the head of an angel' - that's almost like...

anyway - to answer your question, check /etc/security/login.cfg
and look at the herald attribute in the default: stanza.

You want something like:

default:
herald = "\n\n\n\nTrespassers will be violated \n\n\rEnter login :"

Totally agree. A few years back I remember an arrested hacker could not
be convicted simply because the login message contained the word
"Welcome..."
It was on the news everywhere.

While this is now common knowledge, but to be on the safe side the login
herald should contain a few lines warning of the fines, penalties, jail
terms... etc related to hacking into a private system.

Just a thought.
