I powered up a RS/6000 42W ... I found AIX 4.3.3 ... booting directly
into XWindows.
1) The C compiler isn't installed as default ? I tried all flavors ...
cc, gcc ... nothing. Where can I find it ?
2) There's a browser I can install ? I found Netscape 4.6 ... too old for
many "modern" websites ... plus, it is not very stable ...
May I try Firefox ? What does it need ? Surely a C compiler ;-)
3) Can I shutdown the system when in graphic mode ? I found only the
option to logout, then login in consol mode and "shutdown now".
Can I safely shutdown in a xterm session under XWindows ?
Thanks !
you can install gcc, but the IBM compiler was an add-on that
needed a license manager...

as of AIX 4 the C compiler doesn't come with the OS,
you had to buy it separately (Versions 3.6, 4, 5, 6 will run on 4.3.3).
Or use gcc.

Mozilla 1.4 and NetScape 7 should also run.

Surely not.

yes. Open a terminal window and shutdown.
Or navigate through CDE, IIRC there might even be an icon
to click on.

AIX 4.3.3 with ML11, maybe it will work with ML10... but no way with
earlier Maintenance Levels.
So maybe a update is needed.
The AIX 4.3.3 ML11 can be downloaded from IBM without contract.
<https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/aix433fixes/home.html>
The runtime predependencies for Firefox 2 / Thunderbird 2 / Seamonkey
1.1 are linked directly to IBM's ftp server on my site.
If you don't have the RPM manager installed yet, be patient when
installing. It may last 30 minutes on a 7006-42x machine.
You'll need also to update the C++ runtime package xlC.aix43.rte to
6.0.0.14 or later.
