Hello together

is there a direct upgrade / migraton path from 5.4.1 to 6.1?
Is it really so easy as it was described on a ibm page?

With cluster nodes being offline, only install the new filesets
(maybe deinstall the old ones) and start the cluster again after
successfully install the new ones ?

Any hints oder links or somewhat are highly welcome
Friedhelm

Hello,

yes - there is a direct upgrade path from 5.4.1 to 6.1

Do not uninstall the old filesets, since this will remove your cluster
configuration - use "smitty update_all".

You can even upgrade while the applications stay online - but I would
not recommend this "nondisruptive update", which is done by stopping
cluster services, while unmanaging the resource groups. Check for
"rolling migration", which is done by free up one node from resource
groups, stop cluster on that node, upgrade and then way back.

For safety reason I would recommend to create a snapshot before starting
anyway.

Check the installation guide (esp.: Upgrade Do's and Don'ts)

Thanks to both of you, so the upgrade shouldn't be a big affair
and maybe done in less hours on 10 nodes.

Thanks a lot, but rsct.* should not be a problem, because we do an aix
update/migration to 6100-06-05 too.

We have not yet done the migration. Because we are a very big company, we have
to plan our updates months before they happen really.
But if you remember me - should be during march 2012 - I can give you a report
about the doing itself - mail address is valid

Fully understandable to be honest. Don't worry - no report needed really -
I was just curious about that. Did many of these updates in various
projects and for various systems sizes. How many nodes do you have there?

Have a great day/night ;D

The first update was planned in a 10-node-cluster, where the participating list
of a resourcegroup always contains two nodes only

Hmmm... big env as to speak. So - which method you deicided to choose
according to update - online or offline? Even if RG is containing 2 of
these 10 nodes - cluster definition still contains 10 computers, right? If
so - you'll need to update binaries on all of them - anyway. According to
online update - one moment you're facing - let say - hybrid mode - when at
least one node is higher than other. Is there any possibility of downtime
or running all RG's one one computer?

Rgrds.,

No problem, we have a complete downtime for this update, so offline update will
occur

FYI: vscsi / Live mobility is broken in 6165, go for 6166.

I don't think the most interesting for hacmp rsct packages (rsct.basic.hacmp and etc) are part of the standard aix distribution... so update to 6.1 will not update them. Check the compatibility matrix on the ibm site.
