Run usrck and grpck to verify your user security files - that will show
up any corruptions.

Or to turn a simple problem into a worse mess. It is extremely
common for the 'fix' chosen by such programs to be seriously
wrong. A good rule of thumb is never to use the latter form
unless you have already done the former one AND know what the
latter form will then do.

When prompted for the user's password enter root's password.
