I have spent sometime trying to find the appropriate settings to burn
bff files onto a CD under Win9x. I have tried Nero V5 and Adaptec EasyCD
without much sucess.

The basic problem is that a filset like dce.dfe_server.rte.2.2.0.9.bff
comes out like dcedfs_serverrte2209.bff when read under AIX. I have
played with the various FS options and had varying degrees of failures.
The filesets look correct under win9x incidentally.

I understand from information found elsewhere that Rockridge filesystem
extensions are required so that AIX will recognize the files correctly.

I was wondering what other people use for this?

I do have a Linux solution, but this isn't necessarily the easiest way
of doing this, hence the requirment for a Win9x solution.

Thanks,

Simon.

I was able to copy ML07 and 08 to CD on a Winblows box using adaptec. When
copying the CD I used the ISO9660 disk format instead of the default JOLIET.
My disk works fine on AIX, just remember to have a .toc on the disk as well or
you will have to copy everything to the HD.

Simon,

Pack the .bff files into a single .tar file and write this
single one on CD.

Thank you both,

Both of these options work fine.

But what I wanted to do was create a CD that you can install from. Some
of the target audience for these CD's would turn pale at the suggestion
of using tar to unpack files.

This is why I wanted to create a .toc, burn these images into a
/usr/sys/inst.images directory on the CD so they can pop it in the drive
and just do an update_all. I am sure this will work, but like I say when
it's burnt, under AIX I see the following /usr/sys/instimages in
otherwords the I think AIX see's it as a DOS format filesystem. I
believe the problem lies with the burning application, in that it needs
to support this Rockridge filesystem extensions.

I am able to copy fix CD's sent from IBM with both Nero and Adaptec
EasyCD, but creating my own install CD's is something that is still
eluding me.

Many thanks,

Simon.

Right, I still have to find one for Win, so I build the images under AIX.
Then I can burn them either on AIX, Win, Linux, ...
Get cdrecord pack from Bull's mirrors and waste some space on the disks to build
the images.

Simon,

get yourself the windows version of mkisofs. This program will take your
bff files and pack them into a .iso file. It will create the rock-ridge
directory which AIX is using for file names.
Any CD-writing software can then be used to write the image to CD.

From what I know of AIX CDs, they use the RockRidge extention( an extention
designed for Unix systems)
that allow you to have Filenames that are not possible with Joliet extention.
Using ISO filenames is also a good solution.
So You have to find a burning software that support RockRidge extention.

Good Luck and tell me if you find such a software, I would bealso very
interested

Simon, Hugo,

mkisofs does create iso images with rock-ridge extensions. That is why
did point you at the software.
