Help Please

I would like to learn unix (hear there are lots of jobs??) and was
wondering if there was any way to run unix while running Win. 95. For
example could you make a directory to put unix in and play around with.
Or maybe a second hard drive on same machine and switch over to it to
learn unix. Or will I need a second P.C.??

Also would anyone know of any good books or videos from which to help
learn Unix??

Thanks

Terry

I'd advise against getting into anything just for the money. Besides,
you probably won't be very good at it unless you *like* doing it.

Not simultaneously, no.

No.

Yes, this will work fine. If you have a large enough hard drive, you can
partition it to dual-boot between WinXX and *nix.

You don't *have* to have a second machine, but it helps a lot. To really
get a handle on what *nix is all about, you really should have it on a
network. Note that the second machine needn't be anything fancy -- an
old '486 will do just fine as a starter box. Lay your hands on as many
Unices and variants as you can: 'BSD, Linux, Solaris, whatever. Run them
all, amaze your friends!

Video: "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". It seems to be mandatory that
any 5-minute discussion with a *nix geek will contain at least one
reference to the movie.

Books: Anything published by O'Reilly. man pages are great too.

Don't forget the Web -- there are a ton of resources on the subject.

Brian W. Kernighan and Rob Pike, The UNIX Programming Environment,
Prentice Hall, 1984.

Master this book and you'll KNOW UNIX.

Good Luck!

"Learn UNIX in 24 hours": I taught a UNIX class using this book published
by SAMS.

1) "make a directory to put unix in and play around"

There are shareware programs that provide some unix tools:
cons101
ud32
winsx32r
wuup100
these are all archive files names try looking for them on
internet

I is not NEARLY the same as using a unix machine

2) "maybe a second hard drive on same machine and switch over to it"

You can have a dual boot with Linux on the other partition or drive.
It's lightweight and popular

3) "a second P.C."

Probably the best choice if you are going to sysadmin
If not, why don't you just get a shell account? A shell account is a
unix account offered by ISPs on their server. That way you can do just
end-user stuff without the headache of admin and you will be in a
multi-user env which is absolutely fundamental to unix.

books:

try www.mcp.com, it is MacMillan's site and they have many of their
books online for free for perusal.

Good luck
