problems w/ cron on SCO

I'm having a little bit of a strange problem running my nightly backup
and was wondering if someone could help...I have SCO System V, Release
3.2, and have my crontabs set to run nightly at 2 am...every morning I
come in and have gotten mail from cron stating "tar : could not open
/dev/rStp0" (that's my tape drive), that message is sent at 2 am,
HOWEVER my sys file, created at about 3:30, indicates that a complete
backup was done in spite of the error message from cron...I can't
figure out what's going on, and while I'm happy the backup is getting
done, I'd be happier still if it proceeded a little more
normally...does anyone have any ideas?

Post the exact crontab line you're using, and if it's running a
shell script backup routine, post that script, too.
