I would like to have your comments, your opinion and your recommandation
on UnixWare.
I need on PC with UnixWare (for the moment) to perform some really
simple tasks (ftp stuff) but what I need espacially is smthing reliable.
I was told by some people that UnixWare is a piece of junk and by some
others that it's really great, especially for networking.
What do you think about this ? What are the bugs in this OS ?
Other alternativess ? SCO, .....
Unixly yours.

This could start a flame war pretty easily. What version of UnixWare are
you considering purchasing? I would highly reccomend the Application server
since otherwise you are missing major components of the OS. UnixWare is
a great environment when it comes to NetWare connectivity. It is a much
cheaper solution that things like Netware NFS Gateway, etc. One of
the weaker points of UnixWare is its driver support for more obscure piecs
of hardware, but it is to be expected in a 1.0 release. The filesystem
used under UnixWare is excellent, but the kernel is a little surprisingly
big.

No kidding. An alternative worth looking at, if you don't need netware
connectivity, is Linux. Its available free via FTP and around $60 if you
buy a CD distribution. It is nonetheless not a perfect OS, but its very
capable and runs versions of all of your favorite Unix apps.
I've been running Linux for just about a year now, and I'm quite happy. My
only thing is that my hardware is a little sluggish to be running X on a
regular basis...not enough memory (4MB) and a 386-25 are adequate, but not
fast. If I stick to text apps, everything is just fine, though.
