I get so much junk mail from computer sales reps. It's outta control.
I seem to be on a mailing list that is being sold. Is it possible to
stop receiving so much junk snail-mail?

testing, only testing, and damn good at it too!

OK, so you're a Ph.D. Just don't touch anything.

In Canada, there is an address in Ottawa that you can write to and ask
to not recieve junk mail. All junk-mailers in Canada have to check their
names against this central database, and are not allowed to send mail
to anyone who's requested not to get any.

Sorry, but I don't have the address.

There *is* a similiar 'clearing-house' in the U.S., too. Applies *only*
to stuff sent by 'bulk-rate' mail, tho. So, somebody can still send you
'unwanted' stuff, but they have to pay more for the priveledge. :((

And, like Alan, I don't have the 'magic' address handy.

I'm a packrat for such things...

1) TRW (the credit reporting agency) does prescreen programs for
credit cards, etc. You can ask to be removed from their list by
sending your full name and current address to:
Consumer Opt-Out Service
TRW Credit Marketing
PO Box 919
Allen, TX 75002
or
800-353-0809

2) Send full name and address to the following marketing service:
Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
11 West 42nd Street, PO Box 3861
New York, New York 10163-3861

*) And as an added bonus, you also get this free tidbit: How to get a
/free/ credit report (1 per year). Send:
last name, first name, middle initial
present address
previous addresses (within last 5 years)
date of birth
social security number
address verification (photocopy of driver's license, utility bill, etc.)
send to:
TRW
P.O. Box 2350
Chatsworth, CA 91313-2350

I don't know about TRW, but the above address is no longer valid. The new address is as follows:

Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association

P. O. Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008

p.s. Be sure to include all spellings of your name and address.
