Hello unix gurus. I am new to unix admin and need help.

I can't login on CDE, some days ago when I tried to start a session this
messages appeared

"Unable to connect to the Desktop messaging system. Check $HOME/.dt/errorlog"

I pressed OK and got out from the CDE session. Now I start working on the
Command Line Login and starting with 'xinit' and 'mwm', but I can't send
e-mail or post to the newsgroups (this was posted through dejanews).

I've read errorlog:

"dtsession: The ToolTalk session server (ttsession) could not be started. This
indicates that either ToolTalk is not installed or that it is not installed
correctly on this machine."

I am sure it was installed 'cause I've been working for months without any
problem. I've read ttsession man pages, but can't find the exact way to start
ttsession.

Should I restore /etc/dtsession from previous backups? Any idea? Any help
would be appreciated.

Paco.

/etc/dtsession? Hmmm. I'd look for /usr/dt/bin/dtsession,
/usr/dt/bin/ttsession, and /usr/dt/bin/rpc.ttdbserver.

The /usr/dt/bin/rpc.ttdbserver is a likely culprit... If the SUID
root bit were removed due to a security vulnerability, this can cause
problems too.

"/etc/dt" is for site customizations. The unmodified files should
be in "/usr/dt". You would start with doing a "mv /etc/dt
/etc/dt.old" and then see if you can log in. This will tell you if
one of your customizations is messing things up. You could try
blowing away "/var/dt" and letting the machine re-create it. I'm
not sure if you have to reboot or just log out and back in for this
to happen though.

Hope this helps,
Don

Paco,

It sounds like you're on either an HP or Solaris machine. (probably HP, right?)
Edit the file /etc/nsswitch.conf and in the line "hosts" change it to:

hosts files {NOTFOUND=continue} dns or nis or nisplus or whatever

Just make sure that "files" comes first. And then make sure that your machine name
is associated with your machine's IP address in the /etc/hosts file.

After you've fixed that, you'll want to restart the system (or at the very least,
make sure all the CDE stuff is restarted).

I've seen this problem countless times -- especially with HP-UX 10.20.
