I am looking for a Unix software package to help us schedule jobs to run
automatically in a timely efficient manner.

Desired features:

* Useable from a variety of IS applications sitting on top of Unix:
Red Brick Data Warehousing
Oracle
Sybase
Universe
future??

* Ability to submit and manage regular periodic jobs; e.g.:
monthly,
quarterly,
3rd Thursday of the month, etc..

* Allow multiple queues, perhaps different queues owned by different users
or groups.

* Allow single-threading (e.g., job A needs to finish before Jobs B & C
are allowed to begin).

* Respect Unix- or application-level permissions & security. Do not allow
users to submit jobs they would not otherwise be allowed to run.

* Good operator interface:
monitor performance
turn scheduler & queues on or off
historical data and statistics

* End-user interface:
submit jobs
cancel jobs
reschedule jobs
show job status

* Are there other significant features you like or wish you had that I
have missed?

I welcome all advice, product recommendations, or warnings.

Thanks in advance,

Charles Stevenson

We are using Gnereic NGS (free) to batch control our compute server. Seems to
work fine. We have had some difficulties, but none have been killer.

Please consider PLATINUM AutoSys for your UNIX job scheduling requirements.

A large problem for companies using Unix is the management of distributed processing
that is required within their environments. Many organizations begin using cron and shell
scripts only to discover that they are not robust and scaleable solutions. The need for a
sophisticated tool that automates complex processing has increased with the deployment
of client/server computing within the industry. AutoSys offers a solution to this problem
by providing flexibility, reliability and control to production systems.

AutoSys is a batch control system for distributed Unix processing. Engineered for
reliability, AutoSys brings mainframe scheduling functionality to production operations in
Unix environments.

Scheduling is based upon predefined job dependencies, calendar events, or file arrival.
Features include batch queue functionality, dynamic load balancing, and job execution
across heterogeneous networks with centralized control. AutoSys supports interdependent
processing and complex branching logic. Related tasks may be grouped into jobstreams,
managed and monitored as one unit of work, simplifying operations.

Error recovery and high availability services are integral to AutoSys design. AutoSys
incorporates restart and recovery features which automate tasks that normally require
manual intervention. Jobs may be restarted, rerouted, or error recovery procedures invoked.
High availability features provide automatic error detection and uninterrupted scheduler
services.

: I welcome all advice, product recommendations, or warnings.

IBM LoadLeveler is good a good all-rounder, available on all major platforms,
and a doddle to set up.
