I've been asked to poke around and see if there is some software out
there that will do task scheduling across multiple platforms,
heterogeneous if possible.

That is, suppose I had 10 large jobs I wanted to start. Hand them to
the scheduler, have the scheduler check for other machines on the
network that aren't (too) busy. Pass a job off to that machine,
then start looking for a host for the next task. Keep this up
(with potential wait states while all machines are busy), untill all
tasks are busy.

I can envision several ways of doing this, from ugly shell scripts
on just the client side to elegent daemons on each machine to answer
requests for CPU usage.

Does anybody know of existing code that will implement this sort
of thing on some level? Sun only is fine, but multi-platform
(Sun, IBM, SGI, etc) is better.

Thanks in advance,
Todd

Todd,

You might want to have a look at a product called Load Sharing Facility
(LSF) by Platform Computing, (http://www.platform.com).

This is a package that allows you to do dynamic load balancing of
compute jobs across a network of heterogeneous machines. DEC has OEM'd
this product, but it is also available directly from Platform. Runs on
just about every platform. Pricing is also very reasonable.

While I haven't yet had the opportunity to use it first hand, all of the
literature I have read so far indicates that this is an incredible tool.

Yup, such a beastie exists. It's called DQS (Distributed Queueing System).
You can anon-ftp it from ftp.scri.fsu.edu.
