Can I operate Unix over Win3.1 somehow?

I know nothing about Unix but I want to study it. Yet, I am not rich
enough to buy new computer just because of that.

Is it possible?

Your best bet is to get a copy of Linux and install it on a partition of
your current hard disk. Check http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw for further info.

Have a look at a system called Linux. While Unix is a commercial
product, Linux is a freely available version which you can use on a PC.

It won't "run" over Windows - you have to dual boot.

I haven't used it yet, so i don't know much about it, however I've read
a bit a bit about it, and I will probably get an old 386/386 & install
it at home.

Good luck.

Check out MKS Utilities. They will run on top of DOS but allow you
to get some feeling for the functionality of the Unix commands.

I installed an old version on top of Windows 3.1 to help someone learn
Unix, and it appears to work fine.

Once you get the hang of it and want to try actual administration,
install one of the free Unices (eg Linux) on a free partition.

Using Linux with the UMSDOS filesystem, you don't even need a dedicated
partition. You can just install it along WIN(DOS) and if you don't
like, delete the directory C:\LINUX from DOS (though I could not
imagine why you'd want to do such a thing). If you like Linux/Unix,
you can always reinstall it on a partition/HD of its own, which will
give you a great improvement on file system access.

Ciao,
Mike

If you have enough disk space it is very easy to make your
system dual-boot with Solaris 2.X. Solaris 2.6 is in Beta and
installs quite well and even configures all your PNP devices
without a hitch. So the answer is YES you can have both OS'
on your machine but NO not unix "over" win3.1.

Have Fun!!!

Linux is quite happy 'over' windows (umsdos). at least sharing
the filesystem; they both can't run at the same time, of course.
well, sort-of, since linux's windows emulator does run quite a few apps...

it is far better to provide Linux or some other computer with its
own dedicated partition(s), though.
