Could you tell me what UPS you are using(expecially in Solaris
environment) and how good is it? I am planning to buy one for our
database server. Basically, I need the server to shutdown itself
before it run out of battery.
Thanks for sharing.

What you'll need then is a UPS with SNMP support. I was recently
looking into getting a UPS for work here, never actually got one, but
a company called Liebert carries a wide range from desktop PC units
to massive custom installations.

Why? I'm using an APC SmartUPS connected to a serial port on my
server system, along with APC's PowerChute software. It's able to run
through a fairly complex shutdown sequence when it detects loss of
power. The network can go down when the hubs and routers lose power,
and my server can still communicate with the UPS.
I have run through some tests and short "blinks", and they seem to
work fine. I haven't gone through a really catastrophic power failure
with them, so I can't really recommend them.

I am using 3 APC UPS's with their Powerchute software on my RS6000s. They
can use SNMP or serial connection to allow the host to do a graceful
shutdown before the battery dies. With their Powerchute software, you
can set when the host needs to shutdown (how long after the power
fails). Their SmartUPS UPS's also do line filtering, other models provide
only battery backup.
You can check their URL at http://www.apcc.com (yes, that's www.apcc.com).
Their web site even shows you what size UPS you need for different hosts.
Hope this helps,
Tim

I'm currently using APC SMART-UPS hooked to all of my servers (HPs & NetApp).
Everything went perfectly Monday night (all the machines survived the power hit
of about 20 minutes) except that I didn't get paged. Seems I had to move my
machine (wherein the pager software lives) and didn't have a dolly to move the
UPS until Tuesday morning.
Something about best laid plans should be inserted here :-)

(The UPS worked so well that our backups continued unfazed!)

Same here. APC's are GREAT! SNMP is only needed in scenarios where servers
are offsite or you already have a large SNMP network established.

I've been trhough them a number of times. They work for many years. The
battereis go long before they do. The Smart-UPS's are very intelligent with
a number of options when using the Powerchute software. We've had problems
with Best in the past and Exide had failed me many times (desktop and a
large 11KV system).

Hehehe. Beware to all that have linked their pagers to their UPS software.
I recall where one gentlemen mentioned, "It was a great idea to have my UPS
software notify my pager in case of an outage. It was a bad idea to do it
for all 100 servers"!
