I am looking for a "textbook" definition of a System Administrator.
I image the best fit would be that definition used in a job description
coming out of human resources.
Also/instead: a list of the key activitites/responsabilities of a
System Administrator.
I know the job varies depending on the company/system/etc, but I'm
after an outline here.

Thanks
Bob

It's too lengthly for my poor fingers to type it all in here, but the preface
and first few chapters of "Unix System Administration Handbook" give a fairly
good definition of a Sys Admin and his/her responsibilites... I highly
recommend checking it out if you are looking for a good introduction to this
kinda thing... Publisher is Prentice Hall, and the it is authored by
Nemeth <sp?>, Synder, and Seebass. Hope this helps!

True. Also check out page 2 of "Introduction to System Administration" by
Eleen Frisch and published by O'Reilly and Associates.

Office whipping person who is responsible for fixing every user-created failure
on every machine in the office (including copiers, coffee machines and
toilets). Often doubles as the office oracle-of-all-knowledge.

Questions posed to me in a typical day:

"What's the area code for Baltimore?"
"How much postage should I put on this?"
"Why won't this copy double-sided?"
"Where is the stapler? Do you have it?"
"Why doesn't this fax machine work?"

I love my job...
