Does anybody know if either of the following has been found -

A) a spaceship travelling at 0.3c based on generation 1 of PI
(which repeats itself 10 cells displaced after 30 generations
but is soon destroyed by its own smoke).

B) a "rake" (mobile glider puffer) travelling slower than 0.5c.

ASCII Drawings or Life 1.06 data appreciated - post here or
E-Mail. Thanks for any ideas you may have.

If you have access to Compuserve, look in the Science/Math forum
under "Mathematics". You will find an upload of LifeP, which is
by far the best collection of patterns that I know of. It does
include a pseudo-spaceship based on the Pi-heptomino (pseudo because
it needs some classic spaceships in front, and so the middle gets
longer and longer.

Thanks - I have a copy of LifeP (it's on all the best mirror sites -
if you can get a copy of Archie to work to find it!) - I was looking for
two things which aren't in it and wondered if they had been missed out
or found since - or any firm indications that they don't exist.

The LifeP archive contains many of the spaceships described by David
Bell in his series of articles on the subject. ("Many" is used rather
loosely here, it is a large finite collection, the article includes
kits of parts for building an infinite collection of spaceships.) I
have not checked if all the significant cases are covered, or if the
ships in the "Addendum" article are included. The articles can be
found at <URL:http://www.germany.eu.net/people/jokes/ships_toc.html>
and elsewhere (YALIFE in the CICA archive has a version adapted to be
readable as a library by the program.)

Both the Pi pseudo-ship and the search for slow ships with side sparks
(to build a rake) are described in the articles. Both problems were
unsolved, and I have not seen any later/additional results in this
area. I don't think there is any evidence that the problems are
insoluble, just that they are hard, and any solution will probably
involve a large spaceship.

I have an old life program Black and white from about 1985. It is
the best I have found so far. Is there a new standard availiable?
Something equivelent to fractint (PC) for the fractal freak.

If anyone out there can suggest one and where To find it, it
would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mani
