I include the package "optima.sty", put in the directory
where the LaTeX document is the tfm files from
ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/fonts/psfonts/adobe/optima
and use "\sf" in my document and everything goes OK, but
when trying to preview it with xdvi (under Debian-linux) I
get lot of errors. I know it is probably due to the lack of
the Optima font in my system, am I right? So, how can I get
it? Is it free? If I obtain the Optima font in Windows
format (I suspect a friend can help me), can I
incorporate it to xdvi and dvips? How?
Is there a similar font free?
Thanks for your answer. Without it I would have to
use default sans serif and pray ;-)

A lovely font, but for the entire text? It makes good section
titles over computer modern text. It is not free, unless it has
recently been released.

Right. You have the tfm and the sty, but you're missing the pfb,
which is what is needed to preview or print.

No. It can be bought from Adobe (www.adobe.com/type/main.html).

"Windows format" is likely ttf (TrueType). That can be used in X
if you have xfstt or xfsft, but for xdvi or dvips you'll need
a ttf-to-pk renderer. I believe this exists but don't know the details.

Will the "final" camera-ready copy be printed by you or by your
publisher? If the latter, then you just need to substitute any
similar font for previewing (while still using the Optima tfm!).
It might look ugly but you'll get the right line/pagebreaks.
If you need to provide final copy or Postscript, you
should ask the editor/publisher to supply you with the font in
Type 1 form.
