Does anyone know how to left-align items in the bibliography using the
\bibitem method (versus using bibtex)? Mine always comes out justified
and it looks really messy for some entries (some words are spaced
really really far apart to take up the whole line.... the problem is
mostly where I have cited web addresses). I would appreciate any
suggestions. Thanks!

after \begin{thebibliography}, insert \raggedright (actually, this is
rather trickier if you _are_ using bibtex to create your biblio).

(you can get a more satisfactory result using the facilities of the
ragged2e package rather than the built-in \raggedright.)

also, see http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=citeURL+setURL
