i have a problem. i don't want to use displaymath for every formula
involving sup and inf symbols, but latex puts all the subscripts to
the lower right of sup and it looks weird and ugly when the subscripts
are long. how do i force latex to put them underneath my sup? thanks.

$\sup\limits_{x\to\infty}$

But before you start using this think about how it'll affect the line
spacing! Remember that most of the time the defaults are there for a good
reason.
