PARMA, Ohio — Avon coach Mike Elder singled out five members of his football team Friday last week after their OHSAA Division II regional championship win against Highland, making sure each one took a turn to hold up their trophy in front of the team.
Elder first called junior quarterback Nolan Good, who stood next to him with his left arm in a sling because of a collarbone injury suffered in the previous week.
Archbishop Hoban football's season continues under the Friday Night Lights in the semifinals against Avon on Nov. 24.
Hoban advanced to the semifinals with a dominant 30-6 win over Walsh Jesuit last week. Walsh struggled to slow down Hoban's dynamic rushing attack that's been anchored all season by a talented offensive line.
The Division II powers will again collide in the state semifinals. Avon is making its sixth trip in seven years while the Knights are making their seventh in the last eight. Hoban’s first two trips came in Division III.
This, however, has been where the roads diverge between the programs. Hoban is 7-0 in the state semifinals since 2015 with five state championships, two runner-up finishes and a 117-12 record during that span.
Avon has lost its last five state semifinals, four coming at the hands of Hoban, the last two at Byers field. The two meet again in the same round at the same field tonight at 7 o'clock.
Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Archbishop Hoban walked away with it. They took their game on the road on Friday with ease, bagging a 74-32 victory over Big Valley. The result was nothing new for Archbishop Hoban, who have now won eight matches by 22 points or more so far this season.
Meanwhile, Avonput another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They secured a 26-20 W over Chester.
It was another big night for Levi Cavalli, who rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns while picArchbishop Hoban up 9.6 yards per carry. Cavalli really tore up the turf during one magnificent 94-yard run. Avonalso got a significant boost from Devin Nanez, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 97 yards.
The win makes it two in a row for Archbishop Hoban and bumps their season record up to 9-2. As for Avon, they have yet to lose a matchup at home this season, leaving them with a 12-0 record.
Everything came up roses for Archbishop Hoban against Avonwhen the teams last played back in October of 2022 as the squad secured a 40-0 victory. Will Archbishop Hoban repeat their success, or does Avonhave a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
