When I try PDFLaTeX with WinEdt, the program tells me that
the required file

tex\latex\beamer\base\beamer.cls

is missing. Where, in the name of God, is this file for WinEdt to find
it? It cannot find it in the corresponding MikTex 2.5 directory and it
cannot find it in the corresponding WinEdt firectory. Where exactly is
it looking for it?
When I then try to install the beamer package from the Internet, I get
the message that "RETR failed". The program could not retrieve the
files from beamer.cab. I tries 6 different FTP places. No way!
Please help. Thank you very much.

MikTeX can be a bit on-and-off with installing packages. You could
always download it yourself from CTAN, make the appropriate folders
and run "Refresh filename database" in MikTeX to make everything
work. But you will miss out on the ability to update automatically.

Personally, I'd be a little patient and waqit until MikTeX will
install the package successfully. It will probably only be a few
hours wait.

Beamer is a LaTeX-class for writing presentations (what
computer-illiterate people woud do with PowerPoint ;-( ). So it has
nothing at all to do with WinEdt, which is a LaTeX-aware text editor.
Instead it is part of your TeX-installation, MikTeX in your case.

Go to Start -> Programs -> MikTeX -> Browse Packages. This will after a
while open a window with an alphabetical list of all available
TeX-packages. There you can check whether beamer is installed or not.

If beamer is not installed, mark the package in the list and press the
+ in the top left corner (you need an internet connection). The package
will be installed.

If it is already installed, most likely your file name database is
corrupted. Go to Start -> Programs -> MikTeX -> Settings. In the window
that opens press the "Refresh FNDB" button. This should take care of the
problem.

While you are at it, also do Start -> Programs -> MikTeX -> Update to make
sure that all your installed packages are at the newest version.

Thank you so much for these details. But me, personally I still have
problems. (I am a beginner with the latex):
When I start do updating in general, or try to install "beamer.cls" it
tells me that "The operation cannot be completed because of the
following reason: FTP: cannot retrieve (RETR failed) the specified
file".
It says this independently if I choose to update from random ftp
server or from a specified (tu-chemnitz or berlin)... And even if I
shut down my firewall (sometimes it makes difference...)
Perhaps you know what could be done?
Thanks in advance!

beamer is only available for miktex 2.5 or later. if you're still
running miktex 2.4, that could be the problem.

another alternative is that your isp/place of work/whatever is
blocking ftp transfers (they do, increasingly :-( ); i don't know how
to force miktex to retrieve via http. if no-one else here does, there
is a lot of help available via www.miktex.org (there's a discussion
forum there, too).

Another option would be to buy the most recent TeX-Live CD and install
from there. I did that when I was limited to a 56K-modem and did not want
to download a TeX-system that way. Lehmanns (www.lob.de) for example have
them and IIRC I paid less than 10 Euro for it.
