converting from bibitem to bibtex

I have several latex files that have Latex bibliographies with
\bibitem
entries that have the author names, journal, volume, year etc. A
typical format
(but his can vary among the papers) is:
\bibitem{nagel} R.S. Schwartz, A.C. Rybicki and R.L. Nagel, {\em
Biochem. J.} {\bf 327} (1997) 609.

I would like to know if there is a way to automatically (or
semi-automatically) convert this
to a bibtex database entry which is of the form:

@article{sfsro:tocs2002, title = {}, author = {R.S. Schwartz, A.C.
Rybicki and R.L. Nagel}, journal = {Biochem. J.}, volume = {327},
number = {}, year = {1997}, month = {}, pages = {609},}

In the example above, there is no data for the month, number of title so
those are blank.The conversion would take the information tagged by {\em
xxxx} and put itin the journal field, the information in (xxxx) and put
it in the year field,the last number and put it in the page field. Is
there a program that exists to do such a conversion?
