How to transform .gif files to eps files

Does anyone knows how transform .gif files to eps files? Any free
software available?
I tried .gif to .pdf to .ps to .eps by GSview and PDF writer, but
I still can not plug a figure into latex file. I do not know what is
wrong. Where I can find the related information. Thanks.

If you're under teTeX, try the following:
gif => jpg =>'jpegtoeps' or 'jpgtops' (not sure which one) => .eps
The only necessary conversion is from gif to jpg (quite easily done on most
OS). I'm not sure whether the jpegtoeps program is included in other LaTeX
distributions, but I think it is.
An other possibility is ImageMagick Convert, available from DuPont.

not likely, as GSview is a Windows program.
Still, I think such conversion programs exist for Windows also
(haven't tried though).

If there isn't anything on CTAN, I don't think you'll have much luck.
I got valid .eps output from Jasc paintshop pro, which might still be
available as thirty-day try-before-you-buy shareware; which isn't
exactly free of course. Also, the download is quite large.

What error did you get? BTW, you used GSview to convert a .gif to
pdf?!

Try CTAN/info/epslatex.ps or .pdf
