This could very well be a basic question for you to answer,
but please bare with me...
I'm currently writing a document using the book style in
LaTeX 2e, and I would like to use a much wider header
than the main body. Kind of like the same as in
Leslie Lamport's "LaTeX: A Document Preparation System".
Let's say that the header is 16,5cm wide, while the body i just
14cm wide.
I've read through "The not so short introduction to LaTeX"
and only found a reference to \headheight, but nothing about
\headwidth...
Well, any help or pointers...
Best regards,
Andreas Almroth
Put
\addtolength{\headwidth}{\marginparsep}
\addtolength{\headwidth}{\marginparwidth}
in your preamble (probably needs fancyheadings, or fancyhdr as it is now
called).

This does not solve the problem, because this way both the header and the
footer width are changed and not only the header.
I have this done with a patch to fanchdr for my masterthesis.
If someone is interessed in, I can send it.

It solved my problem!
Well, the problem was not really different width of header and footer,
I just wanted a wider header than the main body, because I'm not using the
footer at all.
