problems with \mathbbm on my new MiKTeX

Dear all,

if you have followed my "harddisk crash" thread the last two days you
know that I had to install a completely new MiKTeX and chose version
2.4. Before I also had this version of MiKTeX. I installed all packages
in the package manager.
Now the following problem has occured:
I have included the package mathbbm to be able to use \mathbbm{1} to
create the symbol "1I" (the 1 in the "set style" = indicator function).
As I have now noticed by chance at all places where there should be 1I
(and where it was two days before!) there is now blank space, i.e. just
nothing. I say "by chance" because there no error was produced, so I
first did not take account of it. When I looked into the package
manager the package in fact was missing (with my MiKTeX before it was
there by default, I did not download it from anywhere). Bit in this
case \include{mathbbm} should actually produce an error??!!
1st question: What's goiing on there?
2nd question: Is it possible that at some other places other symbols
also just have disappeared without that MiKTeX complains somehow? (It
would be a messy job to check each symbol on each of the >110 pages of
the thesis ...)

Many thanks for your help!

crash when one already believes that the nightmare is over ...

Ähhm, I of course meant the package bbm and NOT mathbbm, and this IS
in the package manager. This explains, why MiKTeX does not complain.
But it DOES NOT explain why the symbol is not produced (as I said two
days ago I still WAS produced by \mathbm{1}) ...

Perhaps you are missing the font itself.

If you have miktex 2.4 and are using YAP: Try to renew all format files

If that doesn't help, make a complete minimal example that shows the
problem, compile it with pdflatex and then sent the example and the
log.

That's what I tried first ... and once again now. As for the ps-file it
has helped nothing. I also pdflatexed the file now. With adobe acrobat
the symbol is well displayed. So I guess that it might be a problem
with ghostview? I have installed however the latest vesrion of
ghostview (8.53) and ghostscript. What surprises me is that with my
old (i.e. two days ago) system I did not have this problem ...
In any case, it should work with ps instead of pdf as well, because I
prefer working with the ps files ...

Here is the minmal example, but again I think it has to something with
gv rather than with MiKTeX

\documentclass [11pt, a4paper]{article}
\usepackage{bbm}
\begin{document}
$\mathbbm{1}$
\end{document}

I just tested Yap as well, here the symbol also is displayed well, so
it really seems to be a problem of gv ...

Which dvi2ps I use? This is a good question. I just click the "dvi->ps"
button in WinEdt ... How can I find out "which" dvi2ps it is?

Could you please try to concentrate a bit?

The main question is if you are adding some switches to dvips.

Open your testfile with winedt.

Use shift+strg/ctrl+H. Winedt should then say "set current directory to
."

Open then with the winedt accessory a command prompt. The prompt should
show the directory of your test file.

Type
dvips miniex <enter>

You should then be able to see the messages of dvips.

Open the ps in gv. Does is work?
If not, did dvips give any messages? Which one? (Copy them from the
command window).

I do!!!! And I pdflatexed it first. But as it worked well with pdf I
thought the log from the latex run would be more usefull ...

As you told me I now ran dvips via the WinEdt command shell and after
opening GV everything looked perfect (and if course dvips did not
compalin anything). So I retried clicking on the "dvi->ps" button in
WinEdt, reopened the ps file with GV ... and the symbol had disappeared
again! So as matter of fact the routine started by clikcing on the
button uses another dvi2ps than the dvips command in the command window
*?*. If I click on the mentioned button I am also asked how many pages
I want to convert and I have to specify for "generic parameters".
Default is "-P pdf -G0". I also tried choosing "-P pdf", "-P pdf -G1"
and some other "generic parameters". This changed nothing. But to be
honest I have no idea what he means with "generic parameters" etc. But
it might be usefull info for you. In any case it should be possible to
make WinEdt use the dvips it uses from the command shell as well when I
call the command via the button ...

No, the pdflatex shows the used fonts. E.g it shows if you are using
type 1 or bitmap fonts. When font problems are involved it is in most
cases more useful, even if everything works fine with pdflatex.

Don't use -P pdf. It is the cause of your problem.

I think you can also delete the -G key, the option should be turn of by
default anyway. Read the documentation of dvips if you want to know
what the switches does.

it makes it impossible to generate bitmap fonts when only mf source is
available.

It doesn't work when you have bitmaps in your document: dvips is trying
to trigger makepf make a pk with a high resolution and runs into
problems:

E:\UlleDoku\Tests>dvips -Ppdf test
This is dvips(k) 5.94b Copyright 2004 Radical Eye Software

...

This is GFtoPK, Version 2.3 (MiKTeX 2.4)
MAKEPK: GFtoPK failed on "bbm10.8764gf".
G:\TEXMF\MIKTEX\BIN\DVIPS.EXE: Font bbm10.8764pk not found, characters

You should use -Ppdf only if every font in your document is in type1
(and if you want to make a pdf afterward).

The last posts were somewhat too advanced for me ;-) But in fact
deleting the -P and G in this window which pops up after clikcing on
dvi->ps has solved the problem.
Thanks

I see

because I have a small problem with my LaTeX book, in its current version I use
some many fonts (both in the document and via eps files) that just running dvips as

dvips master.dvi

results in an console output that looks very different than normal (well at
least sometimes, I couldn't reprocude it right now), and viewing the PS-file in
GV results in no pagenumbers (in the GV interface).

But using dvips -Ppdf it runs fine.

I guess it's because of the higher memory settings.

is it possible to increase the memory setting used by dvips directly on the
command line?

I don't think so, at least I didn't find it in the docu. But you can
change the memory settings in config.ps, or make a local copy of
config.ps and make the change there, or make a config.my and use dvips
-Pmy.

config.pdf has
