I am using MiKTeX 2.4, e-TeX version 3.131592-2.1 with the command
prompt on MS Windows XP 5.1 (SP 2). For some reason they appear to
have decided to remove any obvious way of doing double spacing.

I try

\usepackage{setspace}
\dsp

and

\usepackage{setspace}
\doublespacing

and

\usepackage{setspace}
\doublespace

and

\usepackage{setspace}
\DoubleSpace

and

\usepackage{setspace}
\DoubleSpacing

I get the same result every time.
! Undefined control sequence
< recently read> \dsp / \doublespacing / \doublespace /
\DoubleSpace / \DoubleSpacing

I would be most grateful if someone could tell me a way to do double
spacing with MiKTeX (that the MiKTeX developers have not yet thought
of removing).

Many thanks in advance,
Peter.

There's practically no chance that this is something that miktex has
"done": miktex doesn't prevent you from using any packages.

Are you sure that the setspace package is find-able by miktex? Look at
your log file: do you see an entry indicating that the setspace package
has been loaded? You should see something like

(C:\ProgramFiles\MiKTeX25\tex\latex\setspace\setspace.sty
Package: `setspace' 6.7 <2000/12/01>

(path will differ, of course). If not --- and myabe even if so --- try
refreshing miktex's filename database.

The following works for me (latest MikTeX updates, WinXP):

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{setspace}

\begin{document}
\singlespacing

Some text

Some more text

\onehalfspacing

Some text

Some more text

\doublespacing

Some text

\end{document}

I have the following in the log file.
(C:\texmf\tex\latex\geometry\geometry.cfg)) (setspace.sty)
(C:\texmf\tex\latex\graphics\graphicx.sty
Package: graphicx 1999/02/16 v1.0f Enhanced LaTeX Graphics (DPC,SPQR)

setspace.sty is in C:\texmf\tex\latex\ and also in the same directory
where I am building the .tex file.

Thanks,
Peter.

The file "setspace.sty" is taken from the current directory.
However this does not look too good: Package setspace
uses \ProvidesPackage that writes a line into the .log file
in the same way as package graphicx. Thus your
setspace.sty is empty or something different.

That was the problem. I replaced setspace.sty in the current
directory (which was 17 kB in size) with another setspace.sty I found
that was 22 kB in size. Now MiKTeX finds \doublespacing. The smaller
file must have been corrupted some how. The smaller file was dated
Feb. 19, 2004 while the larger one was dated August 9, 2004.

Many thanks for your help,
Peter.
