Hello,

After a long time of inactivity, here is the 4.3 version of TeXCAD.

http://texcad.sf.net

TeXCAD is a picture editor for pure LaTeX or, at will, some extensions.
No support yet for fancy packages like PSTricks or TikZ, but perhaps, one day...
On the other hand, it allows to make very portable vectorial pictures, and even to rework pictures made with some no more supported extensions like emlines and save them without those extensions. The TeXCAD library is OS-independent and can be used to make batch converters to various mix of graphics packages.

Cheers

is this the same thing as we have catalogued as texcad32, on ctan?

the catalogue says of that package:

Texcad32 is one of a number of clones/developments of the DOS
program Texcad. Texcad32 can output either to a file of
<xref refid='emtex'>emTeX</xref> special commands, or to PostScript.

even allowing for the unlikeliness of emtex specials, it would be good
to know if i can make that package obsolete. it would be better still
to have an up-to-date texcad on ctan.

Does anyone know if this will run on Linux (perhaps in Wine)?
I used to use something on MS-DOS called texcad, which was pretty good
for the time. If this is an update, it's very welcome indeed.

I have tested it on Ubuntu 10.04, it works except that the toolbars are displayed blank - fortunately, tools are also available with menus. Other than that, I/O is working and copy/cut/paste from and to other Linux application too.

It is an update of the DOS version.

No, TeXCAD 4.x and Texcad32 are cousins.
Their respective description are on their respective websites :-) :

http://texcad.sf.net/
http://www.gelbes-rechenbuch.de/Texcad32/

TeXCAD 4.x understands the emtex specials - at least those supported by the DOS TeXCAD 3.2.
It is also possible to read a picture with emtex specials, uncheck the "emlines" option (picture properties), save it, and that's it - the emtex specials are gone, not the picture!

so should texcad32 be declared obsolete on ctan? or should it just be
junked. (i can imagine doing that for a lot of stuff in systems/msdos
and systems/windows [==win 3.1], actually...)

It's up to you!
Note that Peter Furlan's texcad32 has a built-in feature of drawing parametric curves, that my branch - so, TeXCAD 4.3 - hasn't (yet ;-) ).
Note also that he has a newer version in the works:

so the answer is, there are lots of different texcad packages, and ctan
might as well give up on the lot of them? (after all, i doubt that the
2004 version we hold is anything like "current"... and you guys have
your own repositories for your various versions.)

To my knowledge, there are 3 branches, summarized by the figure below.
