I would like to insert a \mu command to form $\mu$ m (micro meters)
i.e. as a unit, not a variable.
This means I do not want \mu to be italic. However, LaTeX only accepts the
\mu command in math-mode and therefore it appears in italic....
\textup does not work in math-mode.
Any ideas on how can to change this into a regular upright symbol?
thanks in advance,
Martijn
Assuming that you are using LaTeX (rather
than Plain TeX or ConText:
Take a look at the package gensymb.sty from
CTAN:macros/latex/contrib/suppported/was/.
Depending on the fonts you are using, you
may also require upgreek.sty (same location).

\textmu
This is a FAQ: look in the "Comprehensive Symbol List" at page 36.

See the package siunits.

In latex:
\mathrm{\mu m}
or
\usepackage{SIunits}
in mathmode: \micro\metre
This does not work; at least, not under normal
circumstances. Did you ever try it out?

SIunits does not work with arbitrary fonts, and the
code is a mess.
The package gensymb.sty provides a command \micro,
which works in both text and math mode and with
arbitrary typefaces. Certain fonts have no upright
mu; in these cases you need upgreek.sty additionally.
