could anybody tell me how to add line above text just similar to an underscore.

but this works only in $$ mode making text look like italics in the
math mode. cant we keep the text regular and accomplish this.

...
\ensuremath{\overline{\text{<your text>}}}

or tell us what you're actually doing -- quite likely there's an
application-specific package for it...

LaTeX redefines \underline to make it available in text.

\let\@@underline\underline
\def\underline#1{%
\relax
\ifmmode\@@underline{#1}%
\else $\@@underline{\hbox{#1}}\m@th$\relax\fi}

Do the same for \overline:

\let\@@overline\overline
\def\overline#1{%
\relax
\ifmmode\@@overline{#1}%
\else $\@@overline{\hbox{#1}}\m@th$\relax\fi}
