Hi,

I started using biber as the default backend for biblatex. I have a bib
entry like this:

@article{williams2005,
Author = {Williams, KA and Roberts, GF and Lin, T. and Penty, RV
and White, IH and Glick, M. and McAuley, D.},
Journal = {IEEE J. Sel. Topics Quantum Electron},
Pages = {78--85},
Title = {Integrated optical 2 $\times$ 2 switch for wavelength
multiplexed interconnects},
Volume = 11,
Year = 2005}

which is generating warnings like this:
LaTeX Warning: Command \texttimes invalid in math mode on input line 393.

If I replace $\times$ with x, the warnings go away.

I don't remember seeing such warnings when using bibtex. Ideas?

Thanks.

Greetings, this is a feature of biber - if your output (.bbl) is utf8,
it will turn many (most) LaTeX macros like \texttimes into a real
UTF-8 char (see your .bbl). I assume you are being caught out by the
inputenc's utf8 support in PDFLaTeX which isn't real UTF-8 support,
just a fairly small subset. You can get around this by using the
"texencoding=ascii" option to biblatex. Another solution is to switch
to a real UTF-8 TeX engine like XeTeX or LuaTeX. This is all explained
in the biber manual, section 2.5.1.
