Dear Texperts---I have just learned about the Charter font package.
alas, what is a good matching sans-serif font for Charter, preferably
one that is also included in texlive, mactex, and miktex, i.e., not
needing further installation?

sincerely,

/iaw

Matching in what sense? Where do you intend to use a sans serif font?
Generally speaking, sans serif fonts and serifed fonts do *not* "match".
Sometimes a sans serif font is used just for headings; then the fonts
don't have to match in any sense. Just pick one you like:

thank you, bob. indeed, I mean a sans-serif font for headings. I
thought some fonts are sort of intended for one another, like times
+helvetica or minion+myriad or ...

Times and helvetica were never intended for each other. More like
a marriage of convenience.

yes, you are right. ok, what I mean is a font that sort of fits.
there have to be some sans-serif that fit better and others that fit
worse...or maybe I just go serif on the headings, too....

I would suggest Frutiger, but that I do not know if that is also
available as a free font.

For master thesis I recommend the bera sans. It is not perfect but fits
accaptable to charter.

Yeah, if you accept the mix of Times and Helvetica, you'll
accept anything!

Well I don't know how well it is supported in the distributions
you mentioned, but look at Gill Sans.

Similar x-height and similar color.

i wasn't aware of that. i've only ever used gill ultra-heavy (or the
like) for a joke certificate. that doesn't match with anything (even
any rational person's sense of style...)

my address is @cl.cam.ac.uk, regardless of the header. sorry about that.

More like a shotgun wedding. Times got Helvetica pregnant, and her
father, the appropriately-named Akzidenz Grotesk, was not amused.
Although they have been forced by circumstances to stay together, they
would really be happier living apart.

Indeed. Gill Sans Ultra Bold has quite different and comical design
elements and doesn't even match Gill Sans Extra Bold.
