This is driving me mad. Surely this is easy to do
but Google refuses to give me a way to do this in plain TeX.
I don't care how easy it is in LaTex!
How do I invoke the "blackboard bold" letters in plain TeX
for R--the reals, Z--the integers, etc?
I am using AMS-Tex.
Thanks

And less than a minute after posting I see how this is done...
I need to use the amsppt style or issue a \loadmsbm command
and then in math mode it is as simple as
$ {\Bbb E} $
for example.

This requires amstex and so is not exactly the "plain TeX"
solution you asked for. The plain TeX solution is
\input amssym.tex
which is somewhat overkill as it also loads the both the msam
and msbm fonts. Therefore much more than just the blackboard
bold letters are made available.

Where would I find documentation on what "amssym.tex" is and what the
command "\input amssym.tex" is adding to or doing to the version of
Plain TeX that I'm using with TeXShop. (I'm using TeXShop and the TUG
MacTeX DVD distribution.)

For example if you use the dsrom family:

\pdfoutput=0% or 1 for pdf

\newfam\dsfam
\def\mathds #1{{\fam\dsfam\tends #1}}
\font\twelveds=dsrom12
\font\tends=dsrom10
\font\eightds=dsrom8
\textfont\dsfam=\tends
\scriptfont\dsfam=\eightds

$\mathds {ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ} ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ$

\end

Your sincerely.

AMS has this old old information still available...
