How to debug "LaTeX error: Counter too large"...

Am compiling a large document (>300 pages) for the
first time and have encountered the above error. My
latex references says that this arises from an integer
counter that prints as a letter having a value larger
than 26. This is with vanilla TeX (Web2C 7.3.1) 3.14159
from the Red Hat 7.1 distribution.

Any suggestions how to debug or to fix this error?
