I am trying to use 'arsclassica' (or just 'classicthesis') for my PhD
Thesis document, and I have a question about customizing paper size.
In a previous thread in this group (http://groups.google.com/group/
comp.text.tex/browse_thread/thread/378e3e148e046128/b8050b7635b72f23)
they already dealt with changing paper size when using those styles.
But I don't think it is an already solved issue.
In my case, I have to adapt to a 17cm (width) x 24cm (height) paper
size.
I tried the following in the main .TEX document:
\documentclass[10pt,paper=17cm:
24cm,pagesize=auto,twoside,openright,titlepage,fleqn,%
headinclude,footinclude,%
numbers=noenddot,cleardoublepage=empty,%
captions=tableheading,DIV=calc]{scrbook}
\usepackage{classicthesis-ldpkg}
\usepackage[eulerchapternumbers,subfig,beramono,eulermath,%
pdfspacing,dottedtoc,listings]{classicthesis}
And I get a document with the right paper size, but the content (text
area, and so on) is distributed as if it was contained in an DIN A4
paper, I mean, some content goes "outside the paper".
I think the problem is that 'classicthesis' (and so 'arsclassica')
only consider A4 and A5 as possible options for paper size. But I'm
not sure of that, and also I am not very sure about KOMA-Script
document options. The only updated documentation for KOMA-Script
classes is in German, and anyway, it is so extensive...
So, please, would any of you be so kind to help me to solve my issue,
and/or give me some extra references/help about 'classicthesis',
'arsclassica' and/or 'KOMA-Script document options'??
One alternative could be simply this: make a DIN A4 document, and then
print the resulting PDF with a reduction of 80,95%. That would give a
24,05cm × 17cm document, which could be OK for me.
But, is that the only solution?? What if I had other customized paper
sizes to feet in??
Thank you very much in advance for your help!

I think your suspicion is right: the syntax for the "paper" option seems
to be correct, and classicthesis.sty only checks for the option
"a5paper" and assumes A4 if that option is not given. So maybe you
should complain to the author of classicthesis.

Change “LookInSig” to “tcalveu” to answer by mail.
The problem I wanted to solve: Papersize different from A4 and A5, and
moreover: even with papersize A4 (or A5), 'DIV' options given to
'typearea' (KOMA-Script classes) in order to set the size of the text
box and place it in the paper (I mean, to set margins) seemed not to
have any effect, I mean, the width and height (and the margins) always
seemed to be the same, even if I changed fontsize, etc.
So: how can I customize papersize and layout, and being still using
'classicthesis'+'arsclassica'?
The problem is because of two reasons: both 'classicthesis' and
'arsclassica' packages use comand \areaset (KOMA-Script classes) in
order to set a fixed width and height for the text box, depending on
you are on A5 or A4. Moreover settings for A4 are taken as default, so
when you specify a different papersize, the package assumes that it is
A4. :-(
Solution: being more obstinate than 'classicthesis'+'arsclassica'. I
mean:
In the .TEX main document, you use something like this:
\documentclass[fontsize=12pt,paper=17cm:
24cm,pagesize=auto,twoside,openright,%
titlepage,fleqn,headinclude=false,footinclude=false,%
numbers=noenddot,cleardoublepage=empty,%
captions=tableheading]{scrbook}%,DIV=calc,COR=0
% Instead 'paper=17cm:24cm', use 'a4paper', if it's your case. Not
mine.
In your preamble (or your own customized .STY file that you may prefer
to build), AFTER (not BEFORE) loading 'classicthesis'+'arsclassica',
put this:
\areaset[0mm]{12.75cm}{18.00cm} % This is for a 17cm × 24cm, which is
my case, actually.
% The sytnax: \areaset[binding_correction]{textwidth}{textheigh}
% Also, for A4, this could be OK: \areaset[0mm]{15.75cm}{22.275cm}
% Or, if you like Golden Ratio more: \areaset[0mm]{15.75cm}
{25.4835cm} %A4 case
% But put your own decision for the textbox sizes, after deciding
what's the best for your future readers.
% The optimal seems to be: an average amount of 66 characters by row.
% So, it depends on the font you use and the fontsize you choose.
And, for me, that worked fine. It is true that
'classicthesis'+'arsclassica' are also setting the width of the margin
area (for margin notes, and so on): just look for "\areaset" at
'classicthesis.sty' and 'arsclassica.sty', but for the moment I
haven't needed to change it.
Hope to be useful for someone else.
Of course!, any comment or improvement will be welcomed.
