LOUISVILLE, Ohio — Kirtland is continuing to roll, and nowhere was that more evident than scoring 42 points on Mogadore in a regional championship.

The effort has the Hornets in their 12th state semifinal since 2011, all under 18th-year coach Tiger LaVerde, who seeks his seventh state title but has often said he is more concerned with enjoying the time he has with his players. That makes this week’s Thanksgiving practice a perk of the job.

On deck: Winner advances to the state championship game at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 against the winner of Columbus Grove (12-2) and Versailles (12-2)

The Hornets are in the state final four for the 12th time in program history, while Garaway is looking for its first state final berth. This is the fourth time these programs have met. Kirtland won the first three meetings — 52-7 in 2011, 41-0 in 2014 and 43-6 in 2020. But this is the most formidable Pirates team by a large amount.

Garaway relied on the efforts of Braxton Thomas, who rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries, and Dj Johnson, who rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.1 yards per carry. Johnson was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 65 yards.

Meanwhile, Kirtland stacked a eighth blowout onto their ever-increasing hoard on Friday. They claimed a resounding 56-14 victory over Immokalee at home. With Kirtland ahead 49-7 at the half, the contest was all but over already.

Jadyn Glasser looked great while leading his team to the win, throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns while completing 85.7% of his passes. Jamarice Wilder also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.

Garaway's victory bumped their record up to 8-4. As for Kirtland, their victory was their ninth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-2.

Garaway might still be hurting after the 35-14 defeat they got from Kirtland when the teams last played back in September. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Kirtland's Wilder, who rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns on only ten carries. Now that Garaway knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
