In math equations I would like to be able to decrease the size of a 1/2 when
it precedes an integral or a bracket. {\small \frac{1}{2}} does not work as
I am told one cannot use \small in math mode -- and my edition of the LaTeX
User's guide says that although one can use \frac as I have done, it useually
is not done for simple fractions.

On a sun sparcstation I am using ...

This is TeX, C Version 3.14t3
LaTeX Version 2.09 <7 Dec 1989>
Document Style: `seminar' v1.0 <93/04/01> (tvz)

Thanks in advance,

Thanks to Michael Barr and Phil Hirschhorn I now know how to make small
fractions for displayed equations using Latex v2.09.

First off, there is some discussion in th User's Guide about changing fonts
in math mode, which I had missed. Secondly, for inline equations fractions
are automatically scled down some so I realize I have not problem there --
just using the default \frac{1}{2} suffices. For display mode the fractions
do not seem to be downsized. I found {\textstyle\frac{1}{2}} pleasing to my
eye in balance, but if one wanted to go smaller, one could use \scriptstyle.

This may help me with my problems in sizing - and + in math mode -- if I want
to put a -1 or +1 in a list, I have had trouble getting them to look right. (If
there is a better way to handle those, please share.)

I use something like {textstyle {\frac12}} or {textstyle {1\over2}}

In order to get the spacing around the `+' and `-' signs right, use
{+1} and {-1} in your list. This prevents TeX from taking those sign for
binary relations.

In a displayed equation,

{\textstyle \frac{1}{2}}

does what you want.

Another interesting fraction macro can be found in the TeXbook (chapter 11).
