How to change "Chapter" into "chapitre" ?

There is a style file "french.sty" in which they are redefined. Look at your
"tex/inputs" directory if it exists. If it exists just write :
\documentstyle[..,french,..]{article} (for example).
(it would be very surprising you don't have this style file at INRIA!)

Changing <<chapter>> to <<chapitre>> is easy: Say
\renewcommand{\chaptername}{chapitre}.

The others procede the same way. You should not need to do it by hand,
french.sty as an option includes this changes.

Proviso: The procedure above does not work, if you use LaTeX and LaTeX
documentstyles which date before 1-dec-1991 (or the now obsolete
international LaTeX). In this case, get the newest LaTeX from the farfamed
TeX-Servers (Stuttgart or Aston).

/def/chaptername{Chapitre}

See francais.sty, eg at ftp.uni-stuttgart.de
in soft/tex/latex-style-supported/babel .

Or look at report.sty in your TEXINPUTS directory.

that's rather a function of your editor. assuming you're using vi, go
into either your macro definitions or the text itself (depending on
whether or not your ``Chapter N'' is coming from your macros or the text
itself) and do something like:

:%s/Chapter/chapitre/g

if possible, you might be better off to get your editor to ask before
each substitution, since ``Chapter'' might appear in a place where you'd
want it as such. don't know how to do this under vi (I'm sure there is
a way...I've just never bothered to find out).

actually, if you've setup a macro file (or if you're using someone
else's), you should only have a few spots to change, perhaps only one.

same story --- go into the file and change the words.
