Readers,

Firstly, could someone clarify whether I should use this group or
latex-users? I'm confused.

Below is an extract from my main, or master, tex file:

\documentclass[12pt,titlepage,twoside]{book}
\makenomenclature
\usepackage[a4paper,margin={3.2cm,3.2cm}]{geometry}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage{nomencl}
\begin{document}

When I activate the latex command onto the file, below is an extract
of the first (of many!) error:

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.141592-1.40.3 (Web2C 7.5.5) (format=latex

Here is fine!

Normally, a runable example is better - you have \makenomenclature
before \usepackage{nomencl}, for example.

According to the error, your source is not the example you've posted.
The error says:

\documentclass[12pt,titlepage,twoside}

Whereas you're example (correctly) reads:

\documentclass[12pt,titlepage,twoside]

Can you check this is not the issue in the real document.

You have a curly brace at the end of the optional argument (which you
don't have in the code above. Always make sure that you really test the
examples!).

I have amended my file. I didn't realise the order of commands may
affect processing.

Yes, I noticed this before and amended the file. Since I am using
subversion, I think I forgot to update the repository before
publishing my post. Sorry.

Since then I've processed the file again this error has been resolved.
New errors have arisen, so I'll publish each separately for ease of
future reference. Thanks.
