Hello,

I have problems loading the hyperref package. I just would like to have
basic hyperlinks to URLs.
Below you see a copy of my configuration file.

I hope someone can give me a hint.

Thanks, Dennis

If I try to compile this:

\documentclass[a4paper,12pt,twoside,openright,parskip,draft,chapterprefix]{scrreprt}
\usepackage{moreverb}
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
\usepackage{verbatim}
\usepackage{listings}

\usepackage[style=super, header=none, border=none, number=none, cols=2,
toc=true]{glossary}
\usepackage[english]{babel}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[babel,english=american]{csquotes}
\usepackage{bibgerm}
\usepackage{nomencl}
\usepackage[final]{graphicx}
\makenomenclature
\usepackage[final]{hyperref}

\begin{document}
An \href{http://www.ctan.org}{URL}
\end{document}

I have no problem. What happens when you try to compile it?

Best regards,

Jose Carlos Santos

Apparently, you don't know what a minimal example is.
Not everybody has all the packages you load, to begin with.
Above all, you don't enclose any example of what is failing,
nor any error message.

Here is the traceback from latex,

72 errors, mostly errors like
! Paragraph ended before \contentsline was complete.
! LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item

without specification where to look exactly.
When I remove the hyperref import and compile 2 times everything works
with 0 errors.

Dennis

This is not a good way of requesting help. Please create a *minimal*
file such that there are errors when compiling it and post *that* file
here, perhaps together with its .log file

Hello again,

the minimal example from Josê Carlos (2nd message) also works without

So the problem has to be something different.

I don't know...here is the main document that includes the header file,

Excuse but I don't know what to do, the minimal example from you is
working without errors.
what could be the reason?

Hi All,

I am reasonably new to the latex world and am currently trying to get to
grips with it in order to write up my PhD thesis. I was given a
thesis.sty file which dates back to the early 90s and was told to start
off my .tex file as follows:

\documentstyle[12pt, thesis, graphicx]{report}

This, of course produces the following warning:

Entering LaTeX 2.09 COMPATIBILITY MODE
*************************************************************
!!WARNING!! !!WARNING!! !!WARNING!! !!WARNING!!

This mode attempts to provide an emulation of the LaTeX 2.09
author environment so that OLD documents can be successfully
processed. It should NOT be used for NEW documents!

So I tried changing to this:

\documentclass[12pt]{report}
\usepackage{thesis}
\usepackage{graphicx}

and after dealing with an error about \footheight (which is 100% not
used in the .sty file) I got the file to compile (? not sure if that's
the right word). Only problem is that it seems to have messed up the
formatting somewhat.

Images:

before: http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3376/screenshot1gz5.png
after: http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6453/screenshotco8.png

Any ideas on what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated.
There aren't any error messages that I can see, and I can post the log
from when using latex2e if that will help.

Regards,

Milamber_Cubed

The foot-line seems to be missing. You will need to post the
portion of the .sty that is converned with the foot. Maybe you
accidentally deleted too much when you removed the bogus
\footheight setting.

These are symptoms of your problem, but do not actually point to the
problem itself. Probably only the first error is relevant.

> without specification where to look exactly.
> When I remove the hyperref import and compile 2 times everything works
> with 0 errors.

The first error I find in your log file is this one:

{psfonts.map}]) (chapter\abstract.tex) (PRSystem.toc
! Argument of \contentsline has an extra }.
<inserted text>
\par
l.4 \contentsline
{chapter}{Introduction}{3}
I've run across a `}' that doesn't seem to match anything.
For example, `\def\a#1{...}' and `\a}' would produce
this error. If you simply proceed now, the `\par' that
I've just inserted will cause me to report a runaway
argument that might be the root of the problem. But if
your `}' was spurious, just type `2' and it will go away.

The first part ends with "(PRSystem.toc"; the left parenthesis indicates
that it opened a file to process, and the rest indicates that
PRSystem.toc is the name of that file. The next part, "l.4", indicates
the error is on line 4 of the open file, PRSystem.toc. This is your
indication of where to look for the error.

Of course, PRSystem.toc is an automatically generated file, so fixing
the error there won't help. Instead, the error needs to be fixed in
whatever part of your document generated the command following the line
number: \contentsline{chapter}{Introduction}{3}. Since LaTeX generates
lines for the table of contents every time you use a \chapter command,
the place to look for the problem is in whichever file you write
\chapter{Introduction}.

If this error never appeared until you added \usepackage{hyperref} to
your document there's a good chance there's a clash between hyperref and
something else you define or use somewhere in your document, so the
source of the error may not be obvious. It is probably somewhere between
\tableofcontents and \chapter{Introduction}, and not right at
\chapter{Introduction} itself.

I suggest you read the link that Enrico provided:

<http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=minxampl>

Then make a copy of your document and start removing things from it
until you've narrowed down the source of the problem. Thanks to the log
file, you already know that you can remove *everything* after
\chapter{Introduction} (except, of course, \end{document}), so that's
where I suggest you start. From there, follow the directions in the link.

Hope that helps,

Alan

Thank you very much for your detailed descriptions now I understand a
litte bit more.

For some reason, when I don't use the includeonly statement and
generate the complete document, it works. What could be the reason for
this strange behavior?
Maybe it is in the wrong place. where to put it (I posted the central
document before)

%\includeonly{chapter/technology}

Actually I haven't removed anything from the sty file (or anything else)
- I just added the following before it tries to set the \footheight

\@ifundefined{footheight}{\newdimen\footheight}{}

Very bad, I know, but this lets me switch between using the
\documentclass and \documentstyle methods and after changing only that I
get the difference you see.

I am not really really sure that I can identify the bit from the sty
file that handles the footer, but I _THINK_ it's this:

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

\input{fancyheadings.sty}

\makeatletter

%

% Redefine foot rule to be a tighter fit

%

\def\footruleoffset{0.1}

\def\footrule{{\if@fancyplain\footrulewidth\plainfootrulewidth\fi

\hrule\@width\headwidth\@height\footrulewidth\vskip\footruleoffset
\normalbaselineskip}}

\lhead[\rm\thepage]{\leftmark}

\chead{}

\rhead[\leftmark]{\rm\thepage}

\lfoot[\rightmark]{\@title}

\cfoot{}

%\rfoot[\@title]{\rightmark}

\footheight is never used by LaTeX, so you should just remove
the setting. It won't affect the 2.09 appearance either.

> \input{fancyheadings.sty}

fancyheadings is an old version of what is now fancyhdr. It might
not work in 2e (ouside compatability mode). I don't know.

I beg to differ. The error is on line 3. In line 3, a macro gets
called that takes one more argument than what is present in the file.
This argument is then taken as the \contentsline with which line 4
starts, and the isolated \contentsline then messes up.

No, preceding it.

Thanks for the info... Maybe I should stick with compatibility mode then.

I will try playing around with fancyhdr, but I don't expect to get too far!

Thanks for the quick response though!

Well, okay. I think we're saying the same thing, just thinking of it a
little differently: The problem is in line 3, but it doesn't actually
generate what LaTeX calls an error until line 4.

You're correct, of course. And even if I *were* correct, that last
sentence is so poorly worded that I think the OP would have had a hard
time following my advice anyway....

Whenever you add or remove the hyperref package from
a working document. you should delete all temporay files.
That includes .aux and .toc at least, and perhaps the "list of"
files .lot and .lof (I would delete everything except the .tex
source and the .bbl file if one exists).

This is because hyperref changes the number of arguments of
some commands that end up in these files, and errors similar to
the one you report occur.

I can't reproduce that behavior based on the example posted elsewhere in
this thread. It sounds like you could work around it by commenting out
the \includes you want to skip instead of using \includeonly, though
that's not the ideal solution. Otherwise, you'll have to post a minimal
example that exhibits the problem.
