Hello,

I figured out quite a bad approximation of the average symbol with this
code:

$\not\!\circ \; x$

Any better ones?

Thanks in advance!

best regards

see if you can find anything in the symboles file on CTAN

That's what I already tried unsuccessfully.

Try $\varnothing$ with \usepackage{amssymb} in the preamble?

Very nice, indeed.

I've never encountered that notation before and am curious: Is
$\varnothing x$ just the arithmetic mean of x or does "average" mean
something different here? Is $\varnothing$ common in some particular
field of math/science/engineering? I normally see the average of x
typeset as $\overline x$.

Or sometimes $\langle x\rangle$

In Germany you often find \diameter (e.g. from wasy) used for average
(Durchschnitt). Especially in non-technical/scientific papers. So AMS
\varnothing is OK.
