I have created a figure with a transparent background (with a program
called render). I need the figure for a presentation
(pdflatex/ppower4), and the transparent background is important. I can't
simply convert to or make the figure in another format like png (the
background turns white or black). Actually there is one other strange
thing which might be important for you:
If I view the figure in 'display' on my Linux box the background is
transparent. If I use 'xv' it is black .....
tiff should be supported by pdflatex, but I have a problem!
! LaTeX Error: Unknown graphics extension: .tif
I have tried .tiff as well. My test.tex document at the top:
\usepackage[pdftex]{graphicx}
(I have also includeded
\DeclareGraphicsExtensions{.png,.jpg,.pdf,.gif,.tif}
for test purposes but it does not help me).
Is tiff a problem or am I missing something here? I nomally use png or
pdf files for images, this always works well.

PNG supports transparency (alpha channels). So there seems to be a
limitation in your converter.

I can actually make transparent png files, but when I import them into my
pdflatex document I get a black background. So does pdflatex support
transparent backgrounds?
Jens
Now that's interesting. I don't know. Maybe this should be asked on
the pdfTeX mailing list.
(Just out of curiosity, which program do you use for conversion?)
No. That was the answer I got on the pdftex mailing list a while ago.
Search http://www.tug.org/pipermail/pdftex/ (using Google) for more info.
