> How do we get calligraphic lower case letters in AMSLaTeX?
You can use the Zapf Chancery font for that effect. Read the FAQ:

There is a better selection in the LaTeX Font Catalog at
http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/calligraphicalfonts.html

i don't think it lists many "calligraphic" fonts in the sense used in
discussion of the needs of mathematics (excepting only the tex-gyre
chorus, which is a re-implementation of zapf chancery).
furthermore the web site doesn't discuss use in maths, which is what
the faq answer is (and the op's question was) about.
fonts for maths is a slippery topic, and there's little advice to be
found anywhere on the net. (not even the faq: it does have relevant
stuff, but not much.)

Yes, but Lars had already explained that lc chars are rare in math cal
fonts. Given that restriction, this would seem to be a suitable place to
start, even if you have to \mbox the ones you need.

I think type designers are rarely also professional mathematicians, and
vice versa.

Donald Knuth?
I did say "rarely". I rest my case.
