You can use the Zapf Chancery font for that effect. Read the FAQ:

http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=scriptfonts

There is a better selection in the LaTeX Font Catalog at
http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/calligraphicalfonts.html

i don't think it lists many "calligraphic" fonts in the sense used in
discussion of the needs of mathematics (excepting only the tex-gyre
chorus, which is a re-implementation of zapf chancery).

furthermore the web site doesn't discuss use in maths, which is what
the faq answer is (and the op's question was) about.

fonts for maths is a slippery topic, and there's little advice to be
found anywhere on the net. (not even the faq: it does have relevant
stuff, but not much.)

Yes, but Lars had already explained that lc chars are rare in math cal
fonts. Given that restriction, this would seem to be a suitable place to
start, even if you have to \mbox the ones you need.

I think type designers are rarely also professional mathematicians, and
vice versa.

I did say "rarely". I rest my case.

The following is in the pre-amble of the document:
\usepackage{calligra}
\DeclareMathAlphabet{\mathcalligra}{T1}{calligra}{m}{n}
The calligraphic font can supposedly then be used like this:
\[\mathcalligra{ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ}\]

the place to look might be the ctan catalogue:
http://www.ctan.org/topic/font-calligraphic

tex-gyre-chorus might help, but i do not know if the relevant support
macros are available for its use in maths.

Does this also work for lower case letters ($\mathcalligra{abc}$)?

If not, you may try the urwchancal package, specifically designed for
this purpose: http://www.ctan.org/pkg/urwchancal

That seems to have been in April 4, 2010.
Now we seem to have July, 2014 .

I hope there was no deadline expiring in the meantime
for delivering the document in question where calligraphic
lower case letters in AMSLaTeX were needed ...
