I hope someone here is familiar with TeXnicCenter. Here's the problem.

As I type commands, I get little tool tips that pop up, which I assume
will allow me to "autocomplete" (which I think is an MS term, though I
don't know any other) ... it's just that I have no idea how to get
this to work. Is it just a tool tip showing me the correct usage of
the command? That's always possible.

I've tried hitting the tab key, the enter key, the spacebar, even
control-enter, etc. That little tool-tip won't autocomplete. Am I just
too used to other IDEs?

Thanks for any help, advice, admonition, etc. I searched through the
TeXnicCenter help files, but they don't use the term "autocomplete".
Sheesh. :-)

It's always been a mystery to me why application authors seem compelled
to make things as difficult as possible for users, instead of adopting
the conventions in use elsewhere. IMHE, TAB is pretty much universal for
auto-complete, and so is the term auto-complete. Ctl-Space to most users
means what TeX users know as ~, the non-breaking space. OK, so some
conventions were established by other, earlier, authors (eg RMS,
Microsoft, etc), but if users understand them, why make life difficult?

Perhaps it is possible to change shortcut for autocompletion in TexNic
Center to "Tab" but for now I couldn't see that option..

In the Eclipse plugin, TeXlipse:

Auto-complete pops up as soon as it recognizes
something it thinks is suitable for completion.
(For a few choices before you start typing
press Ctrl-Space)

You get a menu of possible completions,
together with usage help.

Up/down arrows to select one;
Return key to insert one into your text.

Just for comparison, ( I have recently moved from
TexNic Centre to TexLipse )
and because Peter Flynn mentioned that,
'(IMHO)
TAB is pretty much universal for auto-complete'

Texniccenter makes a list the possible completions if you type
ctrl+space at any time.

In addition it's possible to add your own latex commands for
autocompletion, but unfortunately it requires xml-coding in the tex.xml
file in the texniccenter application directory.

It is possible. It's not clear how to do it, though. You have to navigate to Tools -> Customize... -> Keyboard. For the "Category:" dropdown select "Edit". Then, change the "CompleteWord" command. You can press whatever shortcut key sequence you want.

Since Ctrl+Space is reserved for AlwaysOnTop for me, I have modified it to Shift+Space. I haven't confirmed that changing this keyboard mapping to tab is possible.
