Our IT guy just installed the TeXLive 2003 CD (Solaris 5.8) and I am
trying it out. There were some packages I added locally, but hyperref
was not one of them. Now I'm getting the error that is the subject of
this message. I'm including the log file for reference.
Normally I would have just concluded that I'd need to remove the math
in the section names, but I know something's amiss since this compiles
just fine on the PC using MiKTeX.
Any clues would be appreciated.

Wow. Do you really think we love it to dig into long log-files? Make a
minimal example first and sent this along with its log-file. Or search
at groups.google.com for your error. 136 hit should be to difficult to
scan.

Do you really think someone can predict the likes and dislikes of
every individual in a usenet newsgroup? The information is there. If
you don't have the desire to read it, then don't.

I *DID* search Google groups first. That's why I'm here.

Randy, you've been on this newsgroup long enough to know that most people
prefer a minimal example. A 500+ line log-file is rarely seen on this
newsgroup.
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\begin{document}
\section{Some math $x_2$}
\end{document}
This gives the exact same warnings as you were experiencing.

I'm somewhat surprised you didn't find what you were looking for.
Searching Google Groups for the title of this thread gives plenty of hits
on the first page, where Heiko Oberdiek more or less says: Look in the
documentation for \texorpdfstring.

UK-TUG FAQ: <URL:http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html>
The information is already there in the subject line. You (your
hyperref) tries to use charaters in pdf constructs, that are
not defined/allowed in the PDFDocEncoding, f.e. you use symbols
in /chapter and hyperref tries to build the document catalog
entries.
Try to track down where the Warning is raised and check the
encodings for the text and the hyperred entry.
Wishing a happy day

I trust that it does. I guess I don't see what's such a big problem in typing
"M-% PDFDocEncoded" (e.g., in xemacs) to jump to the relevent spot(s) almost
instantly in xemacs. I don't mean to be obstinate, but really: is this such
a big problem?

Well Morten I guess you didn't read my post thoroughly enough. The
exact same document compiles just fine with MiKTex on a PC. Therefore
this CANNOT be a TeX source code problem. That is, I should be able
to use math mode in section headings at this day and time. The post by
Heiko to which you are referring is some 4 years old.
I suspect that this bug/shortcoming in the hyperref package has since
been overcome and therefore that this is a configuration problem. I
was hoping someone would come out and say something like, "Oh yes, the
hyperref package in the TeXLive 2003 distribution is old/buggy - you
need to replace it with the latest version."

The warnings are not about using math in section headings, they're about
using math in bookmarks.
When using
\usepackage{hyperref}
MiKTeX uses the hypertex.def file, which is more generic, but doesn't
provide bookmarks. TeXLive 2003 on the other hand chooses dvips as the
default driver in dvi-mode in this case. Add the option [dvips] to the
document in MiKTeX and you'll see the same warnings.

The warnings are not a problem of hyperref, the PDFDocEncoding is to
blame. If you don't need the bookmarks, then turn them off.
Thanks for helping me. I do appreciate it. Please read a couple of
more comments/questions below.

The phrase "default driver" confuses me. I don't think you mean "device
driver" (as in something that takes as input a .dvi file and converts
it to something else) since we're dealing with the process that generates
the dvi file. What is the function of this driver and how does it fit
into LaTeX?
Is there somewhere I can learn what this "driver" stuff is about?

Why should I want to jump to the warnings? I know what they say. I
would suggest that you take your document to your other system, try it
there and then compare the two log-files to see the differences. Then
you will perhaps see what's going on.
Btw: it's only a warning. You can simply ignore it.

Which contains no errors, only warnings.

You need do nothing at all, unless the output is not what you want.
Hyperref already removes the offending tokens.

If you really want to compare TeXLive with MiKTeX, you could compare
the two .log files.

While not terribly likely, things like this can influence results.
You'd need to compare the two if MiKTeX also produced this.

What version of hyperref on MiKTeX?
Version 2003/11/30 v6.74m (at least) is available.

So if you had \section{The equation $x^2 + 1 = 0$}, it will read (in
the bookmarks and other non-typeset material) "The equation x2 + 1 = 0".

The dvi format doen't allow such niceties as bookmarks, color, graphics,
hypertext links, etc. These have to be added via the \special mechanism.
The information in a \special{} command is tranferred more-or-less
literally to the dvi file.
Different drivers (yes I do mean "device drivers") recognize different
strings marked as \special in a .dvi file and so packages that need
this mechanism need to know what the driver will be.
"pdftex" means no driver but pdflatex is the compiler
"dvips" means dvips will be used
etc.
If you specify no driver option to \usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{graphics} or \usepackage{color} (etc.), a default is
selected. Graphics reads graphics.cfg to select a driver, and lacking
such a file, defaults to dvips. Hyperref reads hyperref.cfg, and lacking
that file it defaults to a pseudo-driver called hypertex which follows a
hyper-link standard developed many years ago and followed (more or less)
by most current dvi screen viewers.
Both graphics.cfg (usually) and hyperref.sty (current) select pdftex
as the default if they detect pdflatex as the compiler.
Check if either of your systems contains a hyperref.cfg file, and what
its (their) contents are.
> Is there somewhere I can learn what this "driver" stuff is about?
In the current context, read the graphics, color, pict2e, and
hyperref documentation on driver issues.
Also search google for mention of "default driver" in c.t.t., and maybe
try to find info on TUG's TeX working group on driver/\special
standards.
Thanks for clearing these things up - it is now working properly (I simply
added the [bookmarks=false] option to the hyperref invocation).
