With plain TeX you can use something like
\write0{message}
for writing output.
I do not have the TeXbook nearby and do not remember the exact meaning
of the output channel number (0 in the above example).
However, the actual output will occur when the current page is shipped
out, so this might not be exactly what you need.

\textwidth.
