Grab ttf versions of the fonts you want, install them where
your x-fonts server can see them.

i'd like for the fonts to be available to the x-server for all
applications to use.

thanks for the reply. i've seen lots of references to using TTF fonts
in latex, but none for latex fonts as TTF files.
can you give an URL for TTF font downloads?
or is there a way i can use metafont to convert latex fonts to TTF?
pete
Those glyphs are in cmsy10, which is a symbol font. But in principle you can
find the relevant .pfb file and put that directory into the font path after
setting up suitable fonts.scale and fonts.dir files. On my tetex-based RedHat
system, the directory is
/usr/share/texmf/fonts/type1/bluesky/cm
and the font path is set in
/etc/X11/fs/config

The "latex fonts" terminology you use is muddying the waters. The default font
family in LaTeX is Computer Modern; is that what you mean by "latex fonts"?
There are type1 and ttf versions of Computer Modern fonts available. Either
could be used with X applications if you made them available to the font
server.

No. You can find ttf versions of computer-modern fonts on
the truetex web site (or kinch homepage) Use google to find.
I find the Gimp much too slow when using a resolution high enough
to support computer modern fonts (I imagine photoshop is equally slow).
