So when I include this music into a LaTeX book, I would like to have a
footnote after the music appears, but not to have LaTeX put a
footnotemark in, because the mark is already in the music.
If I use \footnotetext, an asterix appears where I put it in.
I've also tried various forms of
\footnote [...]{text of footnote}, and all the ones I've thought of
either leave a mark or cause LaTeX to complain.
Is there a way to get LaTeX to put in a footnote without any mark at
all?

\footnotetext{This footnote has no mark.}
This will not increase the footnote counter, though. Besides changing
the counter with \stepcounter or \setcounter, an optional argument to
\footnotetext can specify the number wanted for that particular note.

Thanks, this was the part I was missing.
